Who is qualified for the program?

The applicants must be at least high-school graduates.

I do not have any prior encounter with Turkish. Can I apply?

The S10 level is for beginners, but it won't be offered this summer.

How do you evaluate the applicants?

The applications are evaluated on the basis of the participants' academic background and their underlying motivation to learn Turkish.

Do you offer courses for Fall and/or Spring semesters?

No. TLCP is an intensive summer program only.

Is it possible to register for half of the program?

No.

How many levels can I take during the program?

In a single summer term, a student can take courses from only one level.

Do you provide any scholarships for the program?

Unfortunately not. You are responsible for your own funding. Some recommended options are listed below:

  • Applicants from the USA for the advanced level courses may be eligible for financial support by the American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT).  Those interested can contact Ms. Nancy Leinwand atleinwand@sas.upenn.edu. ARIT: http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/ARIT/

  • Applicants from American universities may inquire about funding through FLAS and Mellon grants from the Near Eastern Departments and/or Centers for Middle Eastern Studies of their universities.

Is there any possible reduction of tuition for the program? Is it possible to participate in the program at a reduced expense on an audit basis?

No tuition reduction is possible. 

Auditing TLCP courses is not allowed.

I am no longer a student and/or did not take any formal Turkish course, whom should I ask for a recommendation letter?

You can ask your previous instructors for a recommendation letter. 

How much money would I approximately need for my personal expenses during the program?

To meet personal expenses during their stay in Istanbul, participants are advised to have a minimum of $750.

What are the visa requirements for the program?

Applicants are advised to request information concerning visa requirements at a Turkish Consulate as early as possible.

Will I get a certificate / transcript by completion of the program?

Each student participating in TLCP will receive a transcript at the end of the term. For more details, see Course Descriptions.

If I get accepted for the program, will I be able to take any other courses / classes offered by your university?

No.

Can I have a double room in the dorm, so that my wife / family / child can stay with me?

No. Only students enrolled for TLCP are allowed to stay in the dormitories. 

Can I stay in the dorm after the course ends?

No. The dates for dormitories are set (see Accommodation)
